Successful expatriation

What are the keys to a successful expatriation process?

In this publication we show you the main elements to consider, based on the study by Polanco, Y. V., Expatriate Management. Key elements of the process for companies in international environments.

1- GLOBAL MOBILITY PROGRAM:

The company (and particularly its HR department) must have an adequate global mobility program, with standardized policies and designed according to its specific requirements.

2- CANDIDATE SELECTION PROCESS:

When selecting the candidate, not only technical aspects should be considered, but also managerial and leadership skills, as well as sensitivity to the culture of the destination country.

3- INTEGRAL ACCOMPANIMENT:

The development phase is critical and it is there where culture shock occurs, which could imply for the expatriate and his family an extra burden of stress. At this stage, comprehensive accompaniment should be given to the expatriate and his family in order to achieve the objectives.

4- RETURN POLICIES:

In the repatriation or return stage, the company must have clear policies that facilitate the employee’s relocation to an area where he/she can make use of his/her experience for the benefit of the organization. This would also promote the retention of talent, constituting a competitive advantage for the company.

5- FAMILY INTEGRATION

Family-related problems are the main cause of failure of international assignments. Therefore, for successful expatriation management, there must be a clear and transparent policy that gives high priority to the family level. This can be, for example, by assisting the spouse and children in their integration through job searches, schools and workshops.
